She Did It Her Way

My dear Bathsheba died last week.

She was getting progressively weaker and ate next to nothing, but she still enjoyed drinking water out of the bathroom sink, petting, and going out and around the deck in the mornings. Perhaps she was remembering her glory days when she spent a lot of time outside and was a very successful squirrel hunter.

She didn’t wait for euthanasia; she died in the garden on a bed of leaves.

Some of you may remember Bathsheba’s story. I had lost my six-year-old black cat Gus to stomach cancer in August of 1991, and by October of that year I was ready to add a kitten to my household. I was seeking a male to join my 13-year-old Maine coon named Precious. I had a friend in my office who always seemed to be in the know when cats or kittens needed a good home. A friend of a friend of hers had a cat with kittens. They were barn cats that were born under the back porch of a farmhouse that was enveloped by creeping suburbia. All were polydactyl—having extra toes.

The males of the litter were already spoken for, but I chose feisty Bathsheba at 8 weeks from the females. She and Precious got along from the start. When Jake was added to the mix two and a half years later (through that same friend), she became the odd girl out because she barely tolerated him.

For a while, I kept Bathsheba inside and would only let her out under strict supervision. Of course, she loved the outdoors. When my ex-boyfriend moved in with me and worked from home, he allowed the cats much more outdoor freedom. Bathsheba became a masterful hunter and was remarkably successful with our abundant squirrel population. She once nabbed a squirrel as I hosted a public garden tour. Some guests were appalled, but others asked if I would rent her out to them!

Unfortunately, Bathsheba’s love of the outdoors caused me considerable consternation on several occasions. Sometimes she would spend the night outside, but on two separate occasions, when she was about five and six years of age, respectively, she disappeared for more than a week. Both times she simply reappeared from the woods calling me with her baby meow as if nothing was wrong. Never mind that I had scoured the neighborhood, put up signs, and called the local animal shelters. She also managed to lose the collars I would put on her back in those days.

Bathsheba was never what you would term a “cuddly cat,” but she did have a special connection with me. Whereas Jake would flee from me when I would cry, Bathsheba always came to me and offered a head to scratch and a soft purr. She did not like to sleep up close to me, but she would sleep down by my feet. When I worked in the garden, she liked to watch me, staying just out of reach.

As she aged, Shebie became more of a homebody, knowing that she was safe inside. She lost her hearing and, near the end, became blind in one eye with limited vision in the other. She did still enjoy sniffing the air on the deck, but she no longer ventured beyond the fenced yard that had never confined her in her youth.

Eighteen years is a good, long life for a cat, and she enjoyed good health for nearly all of them. I will miss my dear Bathsheba and love her always. She will never be forgotten.

Thank you all for being such good friends to Jake, Bathsheba, and now Emerson. I'm not sure whether I will continue to blog now that both Jake and Bathsheba are gone, but maybe I will start a new blog or post occasionally with Emerson.

Love,
~Nancy

Happy 17th!

It's my 17th birthday on this Tortie Tuesday! Here's a picture from a couple of years ago when Mom stuck a paper birthday hat on my head in celebration of Skeezix's birthday. I was not amused.

I know that I should probably have a big celebration with all of you in the Cat Blogosphere, but I don't really do much partying any more. I much prefer to nap! If anyone would like to join me in a group nap, you're more than welcome.

Mom, what's that?

Oh, that is too silly. A little birthday cake candle. I'd rather pay attention to my crunchies. Then it's back to my nap.
Life is good.

Tolerant Tortie on Toesday

I was napping peacefully on the bed when Mom rudely starting snapping my photograph.
It's hard to sleep when there's a flash going off in my face. But I endured.
She found me irresistible and had to pick me up and hug me. I DON'T like to be picked up, but I do try to be a tolerant cat sometimes. I know that Mom needs lots of comforting lately so I put up with more than my usual limit for hugging. My annoying brother doesn't mind hugs at all, so I realize that I need to step out of my comfort zone, so to speak, to compete with him. He's been trying very hard to charm himself into first place in her heart. At least I have history on my side because I've known Mom longer.

Middle Name Meme for Tortie Tuesday

Since Jake got tagged for the middle name meme, I decided that I would participate for Tortie Tuesday. My middle name is Everdene. I was named for the main character in Thomas Hardy's novel Far from the Madding Crowd, Bathsheba Everdene. As you can see, there are 4 e's in my middle name so that posed a significant challenge for this meme.

Here are the rules: List one fact that is somehow relevant to you and your life for each letter of your middle name. If you don’t have a middle name, use the middle name you would have liked to have had. When you are tagged, you need to write your post using your middle name and facts about it. At the end of your post, choose one cat to tag for each letter of your middle name. Be sure to let each cat know she/he has been tagged. (It's okay if you don't do this... tag who you want to tag.)

Here goes:

E - Enigmatic. I am hard to figure out, and I keep people guessing. Sometimes I can be very nice, but I can also change in a heartbeat and hiss, curse, and scratch or bite.
V - Voluptuous. I've put a pound or two on since I retired, but I think that makes me all that much more attractive as a spicy vixen.
E - Erratic. This is sort of like enigmatic in that my behavior is unpredictable.
R - Revered by Mom. I am a cat, after all.
D - Divine. See R.
E - Exalted. See R and D.
N - Nimble for an old geezer lady cat of 16.
E - Ecstatic. That's how I feel when I am nipped up, but the high only lasts a few brief minutes.

I invite you to participate if you like. Some names are hard.

Sunday Solitude and Silence

With Jake in the house, I have the deck all to myself. Sometimes I like to sit and just think about things.
In my 16 years, life's been good to me generally, and I've tried to live it to the fullest. I had my wild times in my youth, and now I like to stay close to home and Mom. Many of my fellow kitties in the world don't have good homes, some have life-threatening illnesses, and some have lives that are cut way too short by accidents.

It's a lot to contemplate. I think that I will retreat beneath this schefflera plant and nap on these thoughts. May this coming week be a good one for everyone.

P.S. Yesterday's Washington Post had a nice article about Becky Robinson, the founder of Alley Cat Allies, as well as some photos. It's a good read.

Who's a Geezer?

Being nearly 16, sometimes I'm a little overly sensitive about being a geezer cat. Sure, I can't hunt (and catch and eat) squirrels like I used to in my prime, but retirement is a good life.

Still, I take great pride in some of the things I can do. I still like to drink out of the tall birdbath and that requires some precision leaping. When I jump I have to be very careful to balance along the edge so I do not get my big feet wet.

Here's another angle to show how delicately I can balance.
Life is still good.

Bathsheba's Thursday Thirteen

13 Reasons Why Mom Thinks I'm Losing a Step
  1. I don't like to go outside much any more. I used to practically LIVE outside when the weather was warm.
  2. When I do go outside, I've usually had enough in five minutes and want to go back in right away.
  3. I can't jump up directly to the bathroom sink for my water unless I jump on the toilet seat as a first step.
  4. I take a long time to eat my meals, and I usually leave some crunchies behind. (I'm trying to save some for later, but that brat Jake likes to gobble everything up.)
  5. I sleep a lot. (HELLO, I'm a CAT.)
  6. I have to have pawdicures by Mom now, but when I used to go outside more, I was self-manicuring.
  7. I don't always hear Mom coming. Just yesterday, she cost me one of my nine lives when she sneaked up on me and touched me. I nearly jumped out of my fur! She claims she didn't sneak up on me, but whom do YOU believe?
  8. When Mom tries to give me a piece of cheese, I don't always see it.
  9. I don't play "fetch" anymore. (That was too dog-like, anyway.)
  10. I get underfoot more.
  11. I don't even bother to beg when Mom and Dad eat dinner. I just sleep on my kitchen chair in the corner.
  12. I don't cooperate for blog photos. I guess that's why Jake has been such a blog hog--that little poseur.
  13. Hey, I'm almost 16 and a member of the Sweet Sixteens. Give me a break.

Seven Random Facts About Bathsheba

Willow and my cute boyfriendcat Bubbles tagged me for the seven facts meme several days ago. As usual, Jake always has to go first so I had to wait to post mine. Last night Mom was preparing for a big native plant sale today and didn't want to stay up late helping me to blog. She got up at 5 a.m. this morning for the 9 a.m. - noon sale. Her group made over $3,500, and leftover plants went to some schools for native plant gardens. Anyway, on to the meme . . . .

Seven Random Facts About me! Here are the rules for this meme ...Each player starts with seven random facts about themselves. Cats who are tagged need to write on their own blog about the seven things and the rules. You need to choose seven cats to tag and list their names. Don’t forget to leave them a comment that they have been tagged and to read your blog!

Seven Random Facts About Bathsheba:
  1. I have extra toes on all of my paws. Some don’t retract as well as others, so when I walk on a bare floor, they click and you can hear me coming.
  2. My fur is not silky soft like Jake’s, but it is very thick. Mom calls it “plush.”
  3. I am named for Bathsheba Everdene, the main character in Thomas Hardy’s Far from the Madding Crowd. Mom read the book when she was in high school and really liked the name Bathsheba. She calls me Sheba or Shebie for short.
  4. I ran away from home on two different occasions when I was much younger. I was gone about 10 days to 2 weeks both times, which occurred in consecutive summers. Mom was frantic with worry and posted signs and called the local shelters. I emerged from the little woods behind our house, and Mom was out by the fence to greet me both times. I wasn’t really the worse for wear, since I was a mighty hunter. I never did tell Mom where I went, and I’m not going to confess here either.
  5. I have a ritual after meals. I go to the bathroom sink upstairs and ask Mom (or occasionally Dad) to turn on the water for me. I LOVE to drink out of that faucet. Mom thought that I would like a fountain of my own, so she asked Santa Claus to bring me one for Christmas. He did, but I refused to use it. After a few weeks of disuse, she repacked it in its box.
  6. I have a fierce reputation at the Vet’s. I know instantly when Mom is even THINKING of taking me there, and she has to chase me all over the house to put me in the prisoner transport unit. (There has been more than one occasion where she’s had to call and tell the receptionist that we’ll be a little late for my appointment.) Once in the examining room, I refuse to get out of my PTU and they have to pry my claws from the sides. I have hissed, scratched, and bitten people (including Mom) at the vet’s so I have THREE stars on my file. That’s a signal to the staff that they must don gauntlets to examine me. The vets complain that I growl so loud that they cannot listen to my heart.
  7. I hate to be picked up, but I will tolerate it occasionally by Mom since it seems to mean so much to her. I love her very much, but I’m just not a real cuddle bug.

Now I have to tag other kitties. Since most everyone already seems to have been tagged this late in the game, I will take the lead from some others that I saw and say that I tag any kitty that has not been tagged and would like to play.

Let's see if I get more comments than Jake on this one. So what if he has a long tail!

Kiss Me, I'm Irish!

Kiss us, we're Irish, at least for today!
Actually, Mom doesn't think that she needs an excuse to kiss us. She smooches on us all the time.

Can you tell that Mom's favorite color is GREEN?

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

P.S. SHHH! Monday, March 19 is Mom's 49th birthday! She shares a birthday with Dragonheart's mom.

Tortitudeday

If Bathsheba can try to ridicule me for Man Cat Monday, then I can certainly post a demonic pose of her for Tortie Tuesday.
Can you believe those eyes! Don't look directly at them or she may cast a spell on you.
