It's Not a Banana Slug, but . . .
It looks like my dad is going to settle down in the Santa Cruz Mountains just outside the city of Santa Cruz, California. Mom plans to go out to visit him again in late October.
As Grr, Midnight, and Cocoa pointed out to us recently, the University of California at Santa Cruz has the most unusual of school mascots: the banana slug.
Here I have one of our common Virginia slugs out on my deck. Mom cruelly poured salt on him and he shriveled up. It was fascinating to watch. When Mom was a girl, her first cat Tony loved to eat bugs including slugs. Unfortunately, it would get his chin and neck all slimy, and Mom would have to help clean him up. I don't care to eat slugs.
Here's to you, Dad!
Your son,
~Jake
P.S. Our hearts go out to our cat friends as we end a very sad week in the Cat Blogosphere. For a little cheer, visit the adorable kittens staying with Grr, Midnight, and Cocoa.
Love,
~J&B

I am glad to hear that mom is gonna go to see dad in October, even though that seems so far away. Santa Cruz is nice, I bet. I wonder if you'll ever get to go and visit, too!

Aww Jake, that's so sweet! I'm sure your dad misses you a lot. Sounds like a lovely place to live! Well...except for the slugs...

There a banana slugs close to us too, in the Olympic Mountains by Lake Quinault. Momma loves it there but she says the banana slugs would startle even Pixie, who likes bananas!
Swugs! Eeeugh!!!
I don't wike swimy things!
Santa Cruz is a very beautiful spot.
Pixie wants to eat some bananer slugs, but I told her they are something different than regular bananers.
We have never seen a slug before. It looks interesting. Pop over to our bloggie if you get a minute and check out what Tazo catched for Mom.

ooh - your dad's in a very nice place! dunno why those people wanna have a slimy banana slug as their mascot though. guess that's a deranged college kid idea of "cool". we think they're pretty yucky. our Lady salts 'em too.
the kittens say "mew mew mew". it either means "thank you" or "feed me" - we're not sure which yet.
Banana slug mascot? That's very ummmm slimy. hehe We have the normal Virginia kind here too. They're not even any fun to play with.
Purrrrrrs,
your bud Pepi
Yuk we don't like slugs. We haf nefurr seen a banana slug but we don't fink we would like it.The pikchurs of Santa Cruz look lovely.
We have found a few slugs in our yard. We weren't sure if they were little lizzards or buggies but we tried eating them. They dont taste good AT ALL!
We sometimes whap them off the "hostas" cause The Big Thing doesn't like them there, but we are careful to wash our paws off in the pond afterwards. Those slugs are horrible. And icky!

Santa Cruz is a very beautiful place, I hope your mommy and daddy will meet soon.
Thank you, Jake & Bathsheba! When I started blogging, it seemed like you two had been around forever; I didn't realize you'd just started, too!
Banana slugs are yucky. I don't understand why a party school like UC Santa Cruz would choose an animal like the b-slug to be their mascot. They should be the UC Santa Cruz domestic house cats ... That'd be better.
Mom used to put salt on slugs when she'd go to Grays Harbor, Washington to visit her grandma and grandpa. She'd get paid by the slug ... Eeewww.
Smooches to you, Jake!
